Eulogy and Petition:William Dunbar's Dream Vision The Thrissil and the Rois

Liu Jin

Abstract:William Dunbar is one of the three greatest Chaucerian poets in fifteenth-century Scotland. The Thrissil and the Rois and The Golden Targe are most typical of the Chaucerian style among the eleven dream visions he has composed. The Thrissil and the Rois is an occasional poem written to commemorate the wedding between James IV the Scottish King and Princess Margaret of England. In spite of his position as a “royal orator,”Dunbar is not satisfied with just adulatory verses, but expresses his petition to the king in subtle ways. This paper analyses how Dunbar skillfully adopts the allegorical dream vision to hint at his reluctance to write for the occasion as required of a court poet and to conceal the flattery and petition within the gorgeous dream and veiled images.
